Colleen's Natural Newborn Session | Central Ohio Newborn Photographer

Colleen’s mom, Megan, contacted me in March hoping to schedule a last minute newborn session. Her baby had just been born a week prior and she knew she needed to schedule something sooner rather than later. I was able to schedule her in time for portraits while her baby was still a tiny newborn! Once she selected a day from my available dates I sent her, I emailed her my online questionnaire and contract and her invoice. Once she completed the contract and paid her minimum payment on her invoice she was 100% booked for a petite newborn session in my studio. I’m often asked how to go about booking or what the process contains. It’s that easy! My services don’t stop there though. As soon as your date is booked I email you your own online guide to prepping for your session with me as your photographer. In the private guide I give my studio address, what to bring, tips on how to prepare your family and your baby and ideas on what to wear. I also go over outfits with you via email or text, whichever is easiest for you. I often ask if you need help with outfits leading up to your session date and sometimes I’ll receive photos of what a client has in mind. It’s also a good idea to bring a few tops or blouses for you and your spouse and/or children. This way I can see in person what will coordinate best! It’s so important to me that you feel confident in planning your session AND during your session.

The day of Miss Colleen’s session, she was wide awake and happy. I captured a few wide-eyed portraits of her, which always end up being a parent favorite! Her parents fed her a bottle and we got her a fresh diaper. She was content but not exactly ready for her close up. She was a big wiggly so I wrapped her for a few photos. She wasn’t a fan of being swaddled so I unwrapped her. Your baby’s safety and happiness are top priority to me. I will never force a baby into a pose if they aren’t happy. Colleen was having a bit of a mood where she wanted to cluster feed and needed some extra snuggles and rocking. After a while she was asleep and content! She did require a binky during posing and moving, which is totally normal. Babies need to be soothed quite often. Some babies take a binky and others might need some shushing or pats on the tush.

Colleen’s parents are in the military, with her mama currently an active soldier. She brought along her hat which bears her last name. She asked to incorporate it into the session - but leaving the creativity up to me. My style is very minimalistic and timeless, so I don’t offer a lot of fads or trendy props. With moms help, we placed her hat under baby Colleen. Although a lot of my posing is natural, babies are still very active and wiggly. I never trust that a baby won’t roll or try to raise their head up at any moment. For that reason, I always ask a parent to step in when I feel we need an extra pair of eyes and hands. Whether it be because of a certain pose, or maybe I need to walk away from the baby to grab something. Safety is always first!

It was such a pleasure to work with this military family in helping them capture precious portraits of their sweet baby girl. I showed them a few images from the back of my camera at the end of their session and they were brought to tears. Here are my favorite images from her petite newborn session in my Grove City, Ohio studio!
