Outdoor Baby Milestone Photo Session | Columbus Baby Photographer
Odin’s mom, Okairy, contacted me wanting to schedule an outdoor session for her son’s first birthday. I was so excited to hear from her because I photographed him as a newborn in my studio! Surely he couldn’t already be a year old?! Time sure flies. I was happy to schedule a baby milestone session for her. She mentioned wanting to spend a few moments taking family photos before taking his solo portraits. She also hoped we would have time to end the session with a simple cake smash for Odin. Luckily, my baby milestone sessions include all of those! Of course, not all parents want family photos or a cake smash, so we spend more time on baby portraits with different poses and outfits.
Leading up to his session, his mom and I talked via email about outfits and any ideas she had in mind. She really envisioned natural photos with soft and neutral colors. She knew she wanted him to wear some kind of overall type outfit. I helped her decide between a few outfit options between her husband and herself. She also wanted some photos of him digging into a simple cake. I told her what all to bring when planning to end the session with a cake smash. It seems simple to remember, but usually parents don’t even think to bring wipes, a towel, a spare outfit and bottled water to clean up baby after their cake-eating. They were thankful I helped them with what to bring along!
We met at Homestead Park by my favorite rows of trees. We focused on natural interactions and expressions. If parents want any family photos I always take those first so parents don’t have to stress about ruining their clothes or getting sweaty. As a parent myself, I try to always accommodate parents like I would want if I was booking a session.
After their family photos we took photos of Odin being his serious, yet playful self. We walked to another location of the park where the light was pouring in behind baby Odin. Sometimes I follow the light and not necessarily a certain location or backdrop. I managed to get an adorable smile and some silly faces throughout our session together!
We ended the session back at the rows of trees for his cake smash. I brought along a simple, white blanket for him to sit comfortably. And then… he dug right into that cake! His mom did a test run at home with a cupcake, which is an amazing idea! I’m totally adding that tip to all cake smash sessions.
